I'm reading that she wore them to look rad but for me it was like a hat on a hat. You really could not get clothes without them, and then your shirt had them and your jacket and uhh, no thanks.
I worked at a fancy'ish restaurant in the basement of Macy's in San Francisco in the mid 1980's, and all the "ladies" who came in after work had their Reeboks in their purses and their gigantic shoulder pads holding up their suits. Thankfully the syrupy White Zinfandel they drank went out of style too.
OMG TARA!!~!! I had two friends who worked in that same basement restaurant in the 80s, Jim Minteer (still a good friend) and Wade. They would do their imitation of the Ladies who Lunched there, using their gravelly low voices and rumbling, "I'll have a bourbon." Do you by any chance remember these two? I must have run into you back then...
I was a bar back. I don't remember a Wade. Was Jim a waiter? If he was, ask him if he remembers, "ZIRA! Planet of the Apes". She was a regular who came in and didn't tip any waiters but gave any money she had to the pianist, so he could play "New York, New York" over and over. The two waiters I hung out with the most back then were Bill and Gary. Bill's partner was dying of AIDs when I moved back to Iowa, but I don't know what happened to either of them. I really miss them. You are friends with Jill Olson, right? I think I've seen you comment on her FB. I went to high school with her, and we were roommates briefly in college. The world, it is small.
It's the SMALLEST WORLD IN THE WORLD! Yes, Jill and I pretty darn close for people living far apart--you must know the whole Ottumwa gang--Luan(n) Troxel are seeing this?. Checking with Jim now (he was a waiter)--it's possible Wade DIDN'T work at Macy's, but did elsewhere (Ring's restaurant, so weird). So you probably know Molly Rodham Eness, another roommate of Jill's at Iowa. Was Bill or Gary Irish? This is so weird.
I know all of them. I took Molly's place in the apartment when she went to England for a semester. I had a French class with Luan in high school. I love them all. I don't think either Bill or Gary were Irish. Bill was from Edina, Minnesota, but his grandparents were from Iowa and used to own Gay's Meat Locker here. It is sooo weird.
No, just EMBROILED with all of them. Luan and I studied Russian together in college, and one weekend, we drove to Iowa and stayed in YOUR apartment, I remember that place. Met Jill, and we both ended up in SF together
Oh Brian so timely; I just finished an automaton of Marie Antoinette fiddling with her powdered wig. But no way to share that here, I will send separately…
I cut all the shoulder pads out of my dresses in the day, even as an underweight teen I had the shoulders of Joan Crawford.
What a weird thing to have done--SHOULDER PADS. For a while, it would seem that you couldn't possibly buy a blouse without them built right in!
