From Island of the Blue Dolphins, I remembered over the decades Karana sewing a skirt of cormorant feathers, their inky black turning to shimmering green in the sunlight, and then dressing up to promenade around her empty island... an early example for me of that human truth that even in devastation, we seek and make beautiful things. What I had forgotten: Karana’s mass killing of the cormorants for that skirt.
