I lived in Chicago for thirty years, & was pretty good at ignoring the lake. I love it deeply & its presence, but whenever I made the pilgrimage to its shore, I knew I would never be "good enough" (maybe that's why I avoided it):
I do miss Lake Michigan. I lived two blocks away, in RP, and walked over almost every day. A balm, as well as stimulating. I can say that the James River has similar effects, so I'm grateful.
I'm at Fargo and the lake, so the walk isn't far! But I know exactly what you mean. The James River, you must be in Richmond VA! I am heading in that direction in early September to walk the Banneker boundary stones of Washington, DC as a sort of secular pilgrimage...
So strange--several of these photos came from a long walk yesterday, and I took a good one of the entrance to Bobb and McCulloch as my dog took a great interest in it. I remember back in the early 80s they did a "fundraising" to put a dome over Bobb & McCulloch so there could be indoor frisbee during the winter...

Nice piece! The best water view addresses I'll likely ever have in my life were in Sargent and then Bobb Halls!
